For my digital humanities project, I would like to share with you a timeline and geographical map of a local pipeline project that is happening in and around our community. The pipeline I have chosen to use as an example is the Coastal GasLink Pipeline Project. I am simply using this project for my data because it is one that is relatively local and has been somewhat controversial. The purpose of this project is to give a simple and brief understanding of the purpose of a pipeline and it’s environmental impacts or lack thereof. With more time and research, a project like this one could be used as an educational tool to give correct and concise information regarding the project.
- The digital tools I will be using to show my knowledge about the pipeline project and give you a better understanding of it will be a timeline and a geographical map. The timeline will show you from start to finish approximately how long it will take for a pipeline of this size to be built. The use of a timeline allows one to see how long and what time of year the workers may be in an area working. Given that information, a person can keep track of where the workers are and what kind of work is being done in specific areas. With this information, people can go back and survey areas and make sure that policies are being kept and that companies are following the proper protocol to ensure the construction is occurring within the governments approved process.
- A geographical map will show exactly where the location of the pipeline will be. This is a helpful tool for surveyors, inspectors, contractors and even the general population to know exactly where the construction is taking place. Knowing this information, we are able to hold the major pipeline companies accountable and be informed of what is supposed to happen and ensure that is what does happen.
Using both of these tools that we have learned in ENGL 201 – Digital Humanities, I hope to give you a better idea of the work that is put into building a pipeline of this size, where it is located, the importance of it, and the impacts it has to the environment. Living in the North, we are lucky to have an opportunity such as the Coastal GasLink Pipeline Project coming through our community, providing work for so many. I hope to bring light to the positives of the project while also teaching a little bit about it. I also hope to show you how useful these tools can be and how one could incorporate them into their academics.
